Katherine Birnbaum began practicing law in Broward County, Florida exclusively in the area of marital and family law approximately 29 years ago.  She is AV Preeminent® rated by Martindale-Hubbell and is Board Certified in Marital and Family Law.  There are only 30 Board Certified Marital and Family Law Attorneys in Broward County, Florida as of 2021. Marital and Family Law Certification is the highest level of recognition by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience of attorneys approved for certification by the Supreme Court of Florida. In addition to her certification as a specialist in marital and family law, she became certified as a Family Law Mediator in 2006 and has mediated extensively since that time. She completed the training for Collaborative Law and began handling Collaborative Divorces in 2019. She also served as a Guardian Ad Litem from approximately 1990 – 2010.

Ms. Birnbaum has been listed as a SuperLawyer every year since 2009 and was recognized as one of the “Top Fifty Women Lawyers” across all practice areas by Florida Super Lawyers (2014).

Ms. Birnbaum has extensive trial experience and has taught at the 2017 and the 2019 Trial Advocacy Workshops, given by the Florida Bar Family Law Section.  In addition, she was an adjunct professor teaching Family Law for the Spring 2020 Semester at St. Thomas University School of Law. Ms. Birnbaum has also served as a Special Magistrate and private judge in family law matters.

Ms. Birnbaum is the author of “Equitable Distribution and Special Equities,” Florida Dissolution of Marriage, 4th through 15th Editions (2023); and Co-authored “Representing a Spouse Accused of Domestic Violence in Divorce Proceedings,” American Journal of Family Law, Vol. 12, No. 2 (Summer 1998). She is also contributing author for Strategies for Family Law in Florida: Leading Lawyers on Working with Clients, Creating an Effective Strategy, and Handling Complex Cases (Inside the Minds) 2015 Edition Thomson Reuters/Aspatore.

Ms. Birnbaum lectures at Raising the Bar for the Broward County Family Law Section, including in 2023 regarding attorney’s fees issues, in 2020 regarding evidentiary issues, and in 2018 regarding the then-new tax reform statute. She also participated in the workshop series in Forensic and Behavioral Criminology on Child Custody Evaluations and Family Assessments, Nova Southeastern University Spring 2006 and the Family Law Litigation Workshop, NSU Shepard Broad College of Law.

Ms. Birnbaum was honored by the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women for Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business in 2017.  Ms. Birnbaum served on the Executive Counsel of Legal Aid Service of Broward County, Inc. from 2007-2017 and served as the Co-Chair of “For the Public Good” 2006, 2007 and 2009. She served as Chair of the Broward County Bar Association Family Law Section in 2001-2002 and was a board member for The Stephen R. Booher American Inn of Court from 2005-2021.
